The 2024 season was finally here after months of planning, this season started off with a record entry list, a big, combined field of two categories, close racing and great finishes.

It was also a round of records and firsts, SCA had its highest number of drivers making their series debuts and Richard White Racing had two cars on the track for the first time.

One race was held on Friday and three were held on Saturday in a packed schedule that would have been more tightly packed had SCA and Super TT did not share the track.

Warm Up

A short warm up session didn’t reveal much though the #3 Lumina had a brake issue that stopped Jake Frisch from having a good run, Richard White Racing was able to get the Lumina ready for Practice.

Practice

Danny Burgess was the first SCA leader with a time of 1:44.2862 followed by Brett Mitchell with a 1:44.9745 and John Angiolella with a time of 1:47.3990 before a red flag came out, Greg Morris then popped up with a time of 1:37.6435.

Richard White clocked a time of 1:48.6227 for ninth and was shuffled quickly back to eleventh, Brett Mitchell improved his time to a 1:43.8227 to be the new SCA leader on the timesheet, the session did not provide much insight as it lasted eleven minutes and most of the SCA field didn’t get enough laps in to get going.

Qualifying

Danny Burgess got things going with a lap of 1:46.1192 followed by a lap of 1:48.1587 by Robert Marchese, Brett Mitchell put in a lap of 1:40.7497 with Brendon Hourigan setting a lap of 1:44.8295.

Danny Burgess set a lap of 1:42.8134 for third overall while John Angiolella recorded a lap of 1:46.2083 to sit in eighth for the time being, B Hourigan took up position at the head of the SCA contingent with a lap of 1:40.3745.

Race 1

Defending champion Scott Nind was out of action for the round and the absence of the #16 due to mechanical issues opened up the field for the race.

Brendon Hourigan blew past the leading Super TT of Myles Jones to take the lead at the start, Brett Mitchell whose OzTruck now has a new wrap and looks good settled into second position before making his way to the lead.

Paul Hourigan’s debut didn’t go to plan (SBS Viceland)

Paul Hourigan’s race ended after two laps after a spin that had brought out the yellow flag, Jamey Hollier’s run in the AUSCAR ended after three laps and Mick Heppleston’s race also ended after three laps.

The race resumed with Brendon Hourigan and Myles Jones fighting for second before Brendon Hourigan dropped back and left the battle for the lead in the hands of Brett Mitchell and Myles Jones in the Honda Civic, Brett had the straight-line speed advantage while the corners allowed Myles to stay close and even take the lead for brief periods of time.

Jake Frisch in the #3 Lumina was having a good run and was up to eleventh overall, he would be passed by Super TT’s late in the race but overall had a solid race.

Michael Rice in the VT started encountering problems and after a brief stop in the grass got the VT going again.

Jeff Stubbs in the Dodge was having a good run before having a spin, Richard White gave the grass a clipping to avoid him, both got back on track and on carried on racing.

Brett Mitchell taking the lead for the last time (SBS Viceland)

Myles Jones managed to take the overall lead on the last lap but there was no way that the Honda Civic was going to hold on to it and Brett Mitchell’s OzTruck blew past the Honda on the straight and into the lead, taking the win seconds later.

Brendon Hourigan finished second, Danny Burgess in third, Richard White in fourth, fifth was Robert Marchese, Jeff Stubbs was sixth, John Angiolella was seventh, Jake Frisch was eighth, Damian Sullivan was ninth and Zac O’Hara driving the #17 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for Greg Morris finished in tenth.

Greg Morris and Michael Rice finished eleventh and twelfth respectively to round out the SCA field of finishers.

Race 2

Brett Mitchell had an easier time in Race 2 with Myles Jones in the Honda unable to replicate his Race 1 speed.

Brendon Hourigan had second place all to himself and kept the #51 Chevrolet Silverado in great condition.

Danny Burgess who finished third may have gotten a little nervous as the #8 Chevrolet Monte Carlo of Richard White was closing in on the #7 Chevrolet Silverado in the closing laps but held on to third spot by just under a second.

Jake Frisch got his first Top 5 finish by holding off Jeff Stubbs in the Dodge Challenger by less than .2 of a second.

Robert Marchese finished the race in seventh position, John Angiolella finished eighth in the BMW, Damian Sullivan finished ninth and Greg Morris rounded out the Top Ten.

Zac O’Hara finished in eleventh with Mick Heppleston rounding out the field in twelfth position.

Brett Mitchell was the fastest driver on the track with a time of 1:40.6786.

Race 3

The field about to start Race 3 (MotorsportsTV)

Wet weather closed in on Sydney Motorsport Park as the field hit the track for Race 3 but thankfully the weather stayed away.

Brett Mitchell led from the start and Brendon Hourigan moved up to second overall and stayed close to the #8 in the first third of the race.

Richard White and Jeff Stubbs contesting for fourth in SCA, fifth overall (MotorsportsTV)

Richard White and Jeff Stubbs had a good battle before Jeff got the pass done and got away from the #8 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that then had to contend with the Nissan of Cory Gillett that was sliding around and looked like it was going to hit the Chevrolet Monte Carlo at any moment.

The #3 of Jake Frisch after a spin (MotorsportsTV)

Brendon Hourigan dropped out of the race on Lap 6 after being moments away from taking the lead and Jake Frisch had a spin from sixth position (tenth on track) but was able to get the #3 Lumina going again.

Start it from 1:02:23 for Race 3 (MotorsportsTV)

Brett Mitchell’s lead over Myles Jones that was 3 seconds on Lap 6 was shrinking rapidly, so much so that it was just over a second by Lap 10 and then Jones was passing the #8 only for the #8 to pick off the Honda by the front straight.

Danny Burgess going for the win (MotorsportsTV)

Suddenly the Honda slowed to a crawl and then came to stop, while this dramatic moment was on screens, Danny Burgess was right on the back of Brett Mitchell’s OzTruck to set up a thrilling finish but the #8 had a strong second half of the lap to hold on for the win and make it three wins from three races.

After the #8 OzTruck was Danny Burgess, Jeff Stubbs, Richard White and Robert Marchese to round out the Top 5.

Race 4

A long delay in proceedings due to a crash in the Trans Am race cut the race right down to a seven-minute race (the category after it got 5 minutes).

Brett Mitchell was aiming to make it a clean sweep, Myles Jones was back in action in the Honda Civic to lead the Super TT charge and opportunity was in the air.

The SCA field was cut down to 6 runners after starting Friday with seventeen, racing along with Brett Mitchell was Danny Burgess, Jake Frisch in the second RWR car, Jeff Stubbs, Daniel Stubbs and Damian Sullivan.

Jeff Stubbs recorded a fastest lap of 1:40.9787 and nabbed the #8 OzTruck approaching the line to win by .201 seconds, this was Jeff’s first win in Stock Cars Australia.
