There are 23 days to go until Round 3 action takes place at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Entries are now open, and they can be done online at this link, SCA will be paired up with Super TT for the round so that’s where the entries have got to go.

The schedule is out, Qualifying is on at 8:50am, Race 1 is at 10:50am, Race 2 is at 1:25pm and Race 3 is on at 3:27pm.

Big news was announced this morning with Jack Perkins now having a second Xfinity ride with Joe Gibbs Racing, his debut has been moved up and he will be racing at Chicago in the #19 Toyota Supra, a great result for Jack and it is great that Joe Gibbs has great faith in Australian drivers.

Don’t forget that Cam Waters is in the Craftsman Truck Series at Lime Rock Park this weekend in the No. 66 Ford F-150 sponsored by Tradie, Waters Whisky and other sponsors, it will be Cam’s third start in the series.

Those who use the Thunderdome for Drifting will have little trouble seeing the track at night thanks to LED lights being fitted in the light poles around the track to replace the system that has been around since 1994, one big benefit is that costs will be lowered on using the new lights at events as less power is required.

The report by V8 Sleuth’s Mark Walker highlights the amount of work that has gone into Calder Park and its increase in business since racing got going again on the raceway in 2023, SCA also got a plug when the final round of the season was mentioned for November 7 to 9.

This week while watching videos on YouTube like many a bored person has done to pass the time, Stock Car footage in the above credits section got attention as it featured bits of a Calder Park Raceway round that V8 Sleuth reported on last year, but it was not from the race that they had shown.

The moment that may have changed Stock Car history in Australia

The snippets were from Race 2 when John Faulkner spun Brad Jones with different opinions given on what happened and there were some strange decisions from officials in the aftermath plus there were some angry sponsors too.

While reading the report of the round, it was remembered that for a time, they used to only give a win to those who won a round not who won the individual races.

Because of this, wins by Brad Jones, Charlie O’Brien, Kevin Schwantz, Kim Jane and Jim Richards were not counted, one example is that Jim won two races at ‘Thunder at The Creek’ but it only counts as one because he was the overall winner and Charlie’s win at the event doesn’t count as he was not the overall winner, what a head spinner.

We purchased some more Auto Action magazines from 1993, sadly none contained any answers to our mysteries, AUSCAR, NASCAR and Sportsman really struggled in the off-season when it came to news as all the major players like Indycar, Formula 1, ATCC/V8 Supercars and Rallying were all in action and taking up pages.

Most Wanted

We are looking for anybody who may know where this ex-Brad Jones, ex-Kim Jane ride car Lumina that has Oldsmobile parts (like the rear bumper) came from before Brad Jones owned it, we have two different opinions, one is that it came from George Elliot (he isn’t sure about that) and the other is it came from Walter Giles (the Giles family doesn’t believe that).

The right side 3/4 window is considered key; it is a Lumina 3/4 window; it is considered odd because it is surrounded by Oldsmobile parts.

Pink was found underneath in the surviving layers of paint pointing its history towards Ron Goodman’s car for the Gold Coast in 1992 and Walter Giles who had pink cars.

The #05 Ron Goodman Oldsmobile was an ex-George Elliot Oldsmobile as stated in the Round 4 1991/92 programme, it was originally claimed to be a car purchased from George, but a later publication said it was ‘lent’ (leased) to Ron by George, and it was given back to George.

As you can see, the right side of this Oldsmobile has a Lumina 3/4 window.

It appears that the Ron Goodman #05 also has a Lumina 3/4 window on its left side too making it a very odd-looking Oldsmobile.

Either George’s team fully changed the Goodman Oldsmobile into a Lumina after it was given back, or they left it as is by replacing the front to Chevrolet after the Olds one took a beating on the Gold Coast, and it served as a ride car.

Hopefully somebody who worked on George’s team in 1992 recalls a car going to Ron Goodman likely from the NASTRAK collection and being returned.

Somebody out there has to know for sure, Brad Jones getting a ride car had to be a pretty big deal as he only had ‘Elroy’ on hand early on, plus a ride car is a nice way to get more Stock Car laps in too.

We’re still looking for anybody who has a written account on where Ian Thomas got his 1992/93 Oldsmobile from (see above), opinion is split between Doug Taylor building it and Doug Taylor reconditioning it meaning it came from somebody else.

The key is the unique left 3/4 window as seen above, it has a hatch on it, bigger than the ones that Hagan and Moroso had and similar to Rahmoc Enterprises though their six points were all on the sides, none are in the middle; despite looking at hundreds of photos, we haven’t found a match.

It was the only Ian Thomas Oldsmobile to have this hatch, but the car seems to be an anomaly from the 1992/93 season, quickly forgotten as the Lumina came to TCR the next season and the Olds were either converted, at least one kept for road courses and others were sold off.

That’s it for this week, another interesting week in the Australian Stock Car world, never a dull moment, just the way we all like it to be.

See you next week.
