V8 Sleuth reported in 2024 about the Stock Cars racing at Calder Park Raceway on February 18, 1996, the footage that V8 Sleuth uploaded is from Race 3 of the round, we know this from reading the March 1, 1996, edition of Motorsport News and matched up events in the article with what is in the video and the V8 Sleuth article.

We spotted something interesting the other night while going through YouTube, YouTube channel ‘Australian Motorsport Classics’ in 2012 uploaded footage of HQ Holdens and Stock Cars taken from Fox Sports and if you look really closely you will see snippets of footage from the round scattered in the Stock Car section of the video that starts from 2:51.

Included in the footage is John Faulkner spinning Brad Jones and that happened in Race 2 with both drivers giving different versions of events, John Faulkner had taken the chequered flag a lap later and Brad Jones finished in fifth.

However, controversy followed as officials gave the win to Brad Jones which made Kevin Schwantz and Jim Richards unhappy as they would both lose a place as the spun-out Jones had finished behind them.

The officials then changed their minds on Brad Jones winning and gave race winner John Faulkner a thirty second penalty and put Brad Jones back down to his fifth place which gave the win to Kevin Schwantz.

What followed was a reaction from very angry sponsors of the #46 Monte Carlo and an announcement from them shortly afterwards of John Faulkner pulling out of the sport, things soon calmed down and John would complete the season and would later make an appearance here and there while also racing in Legends and having a go at V8 Supercars.

The archived Calder Park website mentions the three Calder Park races; it only lists one winner and that is Jim Richards despite Jim winning Race 1 and 3 and Kevin winning Race 2.

The reason is because they counted overall points for the round not who won each individual race take for example Oran Park in 1995, races were won by Brad Jones, Kevin Schwantz and Kim Jane but Kevin Schwantz is credited as the winner because he got the most points.

Had they counted individual wins instead of overall points wins, the all-time winners list may be different as Jim Richards would pick up a couple of more wins and Kim Jane would have another win to his tally as would Kevin Schwantz and Charlie O’Brien.

The footage just shows the value at looking at things closely even if you’ve seen it a hundred times before, something interesting may just be sitting in plain sight.
