You’ve got the itch to join Stock Cars Australia or you just to own a Stock Car in Australia for your personal enjoyment.

It’s going to cost you but that’s what motorsport is, expensive but fun.

A set up race ready car to run in Australia costs anywhere north of $10,000, SCA AUSCAR President Troy Perichon has written up a rough guide with the following figures.

Nascar $40 – 60k
Oztruck $30 – 50k
AUSCAR $20 – 40k
Sportsman $10- 20k

HQ Dart Amor says a good HQ could cost you $20,000; they are the great survivors of all the categories that graced the Calder Park Thunderdome on a regular basis, they are also plentiful despite decades of close quarter racing.

You may get lucky and score a running Stock Car for less money than the rough guide, a car’s value is in the hands of the owner so browsing around is your best bet, Troy Perichon, Brad Hall (both can be found at AUSCAR Racing) and Zac O’Hara (Stock Cars Australia) are your best options to get the ball rolling on purchasing one.

As it stands there are plenty of vehicles to be purchased, it is a question of condition, a lot of them still need parts to complete the job, many stopped running in 2002, some was parked way before then but every now and then a ready to go, Australian raced Stock Car is up for sale, and you usually have to be quick.

There’s nothing stopping you from buying a car from the USA, rollers can be as low as $6,000 USD but you will need to take into account currency conversion (that’s more than 35 cents per dollar extra for example 1 USD has you paying $1.35 AUD), taxes, shipping and transport and then you got to buy all the important parts and pieces.

You could get a car or truck ready to go, there are sites like racingjunk.com that cater for that route, a Harry Gant run car is selling for $31,000 USD that’s $46,476.78 AUD before things like shipping are added.

Scott Nind, Stephen Dale and Jeremy Gunson have gone the overseas route with Scott having two Stock Cars, Stephen one and Jeremy has a Truck.

You got to weigh up the pros and cons of every option but remember you are not alone no matter which option you choose to take.

There’s one additional option to look at, the Muscle Division which is open to all V8’s, this category under SCA has kept the field steady for a long time especially when Stock Cars are out of action.

While some may dub SCA a ‘vintage series’ it is more a broad church, you’ve got Sportsman cars that were the original AUSCARs, you’ve got the latter day AUSCARs, the 80s and 90s Stock Cars, the OzTrucks of this century, more recent generations of Stock Cars and you’ve also got the Muscle Division too.

The series is not a pleasure cruise, drivers like to go fast and improve every time, there is always a risk out there and 99% of the time everything is sweet, some drivers like Richard White have a dedicated team, its serious stuff and you’re surrounded by friends to make it all worthwhile.

One thing that you can depend on is the knowledge that there are people out there who will help you complete your Stock Car racing goals in Australia.
