42 days to go until Round 2 racing takes place at Queensland Raceway and we’re very grateful to those who are making the trip up to QLD because we know it is a long haul.
Stock Cars is a popular topic in Australia at the moment as Will Brown and Cam Waters are likely to be racing at Sonoma, hopefully the number of entries doesn’t exceed the number of spots so there is no chance of getting a DNQ.
In terms of Australians in NASCAR sanctioned racing, it is almost like the time in the 1980’s when Tony Spanos, Terry Byers, Allan Grice and Dick Johnson were all trying to make races in the United States at the around the same time.
Some think that the fact that Supercars stars are willing to race in America is a sign that all is not well with the number one category in Australia, but nothing is going to sink Supercars at this time, it will keep on keeping on and reign on as No. 1.
I think one of the things missing from Supercars and most sports is the ability for people to be able to come into a sport to be part of the action and try and have a good day like when Privateers got into the Top 10 at Bathurst and then they made their way up the order.
Now you need big dollars and the right to have a team and it takes away something special, it’s too cold and business like but Supercars have such a hold on the motorsport landscape that TCR and other sports can’t get a foothold and struggle to be both viable and visible.
One of the reasons (not the reason) why series like Super Tourers and Australian NASCAR etc. sunk and others like TCR struggle is that if don’t have sizable media interest from the big guys, your series will not survive in this country especially if it involves big money.
Thankfully categories like Stock Cars Australia are well away from Motorsport Australia and into the arms of the AASA which make people feel right at home.
Hopefully the interest in NASCAR generated by Van Gisbergen, Will Brown and Cam Waters will flow on to Stock Cars Australia and get people interested in the series.
It is true that SCA is a coalition of the Stock Car family, but you never know there could be big enough numbers one day to be able to split off Stock Cars and OzTrucks, SCA AUSCARs and the Muscle Division into their own categories under the SCA banner.
The season opener was big, so big it was record-breaking when it came to entries (some entries ticked off Super TT too) even though we were still missing the #1, #27, #6, #16 (or the #34), the #22 and the #25 (or the #82).
The future looks good, we got cars from Adam Blattman and Cole Davis to come, the #226 OzTruck is coming back likely in a new look and number too, there are a couple of ex-AUSCARs like the ex-Wyllie Commodore and we’re always hoping that the #66 Commodore that Brad Hall owns will join the party sometime.
Jake Frisch has a project Pontiac in the works and a couple of other owners have restoration projects on the go, if any of them need help, speak up and perhaps somebody will help you out.
We’re all part of a great adventure and together we can take the adventure further.
Sorry this edition has been late in arriving; a few bad things occurred this week, so the energy and motivation has been a little lacking but hopefully next week things will be sunnier again.
