There are 63 days to go until the season opener at Sydney Motorsport Park, it may seem pretty far away, but time will go by quickly as it usually does as the excitement builds towards the start of the season.

Expect an uptick of interest from this weekend, the start of the NASCAR’s three series (ARCA too) usually translates into interest in all things related to Stock Car racing and that includes us.

Drive Events Pty Ltd. have today confirmed that there will be a Calder Park Thunderdome Drive Day on March 23, interested people should book their spot as soon as possible and please remember to please drive safely.

Earlier this week, the remains of a Stock Car was posted on Bring NASCAR Back to Australia, the four photos were enough for those in the know to identify it as a car formerly belonging to Trevor Oliver, it is a long way from looking like a Stock Car, but you got to admire somebody taking on such a job.

Another mystery car popped up on NASCAR Australia AU, an Oldsmobile with more details than the Trevor Oliver car, it has all its parts and pieces to identify a car with the exception of paint but so far nobody knows who it belonged to on the racetrack, leading candidates were Charlie O’Brien and David Grose, but they are ruled out.

One member of the group this afternoon mentioned that it was a land speed car and so I put in google ‘land speed Australia + Oldsmobile Cutlass’ and one of the results was this page and on that page was photos of a Cutlass, and the front of it matched the mysterious car but there was no interior image to make it a slam dunk.

A search on YouTube found videos of the land speed car and its owner filmed the interior and it matched the interior of the car in the present day.

There is a little bit of red paint in the interior of the present-day car, the front of the car matches, the word ‘fan’ matches and there is a triangle right above the fourth switch in both past and present images, this is the car Tony Southwell was searching for more history on.

The next phase would be finding out who the land speed racer got the car from and hopefully establish a history all the way down to who was racing it.

Work is continuing on updating the written histories of the vehicles in Stock Cars Australia, a little bit was added to the upcoming stories of the #5 and #19 but there are plenty of others to go through as well.

That’s it for this week, it was fun finding out about the Oldsmobile Cutlass, all that looking through photos when ‘land speed’ was the big pointer all along, that’s the quirkiness of life, one little detail can be the difference between fruitless searching and a quick answer.
