Another legend is gone

November 8 2019

Race fans were saddened today to learn of the death of legendary sports commentator Mike Raymond.

Mike Raymond may of been best known for his Speedway commentary as well as his Touring Car commentary especially at Bathurst for several decades but he was also an important piece of the early years of stock car racing in Australia.

Channel 7 had the rights to the action at Calder Park Thunderdome when it started in 1988 so viewers around Australia got to hear him call the action for years until Channel 7 decided that the Australian Touring Car Championship was better than what AUSCAR, NASCAR, HQ Holden and other categories offered at the Thunderdome and other tracks.

Thankfully thanks to YouTube, there is no shortage of videos that featured his commentary so he really isn’t gone as he will always live on in replays of races on home computers, TV’s and other devices.
